How Life Coaching Works

As A life coach I work with my clients to help them identify what issues are important to them and what their ultimate goals, visions or challenges are.

I help people to explore what options are open to them. All too often we tend to choose the same options, ones that are comfortable, familiar, or that have worked before, and this prevents people from seeing the full range of opportunities open to them. I encourage and support my clients to look more broadly, and out of the box. I act as an impartial sounding board for client’s ideas; and help them to identify the steps needed to be taken in order for them to achieve their goals. Life coaching is challenging and clients must be prepared to make changes in order to fulfil their aims.

Life Coaching can be carried out over the telephone, or in face-to-face meetings. Sessions usually last from between 45 to 55 minutes, and are booked in groups of three or four, depending on the processes we have agreed to use. A skilled and experienced Life Coach will have a large bag of tools to work with. Some of the processes we use are session limited, some are spread over three or four sessions. Initially, clients usually opt to book in blocks of four. The first four are held weekly; the next group are held every two to three weeks; after that sessions are spaced to suit the clients wants and needs. There is, however, no hard and fast rule. Each client’s requirements are different, and sessions will be arranged to suit the client’s needs.

Evidence has been published that Life Coaching works.

Life Coaching is not new, it has been widely used for several years in the UK; and it is now the second biggest growth industry after ITC. There are many life coaching success stories.

Many businesses now employ life coaches directly to help their staff fulfil their potential and to decrease stress in the workplace. Evidence shows that companies who put in staff support to decrease stress can reduce absence by over 20%: by including Life Coaching as an intervention companies can increase that 20% to a staggering 80%

How does Life Coaching differ from Counselling

Coaching is quite different from counselling: Life Coaching is totally solution focussed rather than problem focussed. Life Coaching doesn’t look at the past, other than to use you current skills, abilities and capabilities. Life Coaching is very practical and very effective.
