Wheel of Life Exercise

Everyone knows that having a balance in life is important because we can be more content and more alive and enjoy what we are doing.

The wheel of life exercise allows you to determine whether you are focusing too much on one part of your life and so neglecting others. The wheel is divided into sections. Rank your level of satisfaction with each area of your life.

Directions: The eight sections in the Wheel of Life represent balance. Regarding the centre of the wheel as 0 and the outer edge as 10, rank your level of satisfaction with each life area by drawing a straight or curved line to create a new outer edge (see example). The new perimeter of the circle represents the Wheel of Life. How bumpy would the ride be if this were a real wheel?

Your result shows you the degree to which you are satisfied with your level of balance in your life. The more shading there is, the more you are satisfied. Which are you low spots – the areas you are least satisfied with? Make a list of them and rank them in order of importance to you right now. Taking rank number 1 – the areas of your life you are least satisfied with, answer the following questions.

What is it most important to me right now to become more satisfied with this area – money, friends, family or whatever it is?

  • · What can I do personally to improve things?
  • · What can I ask others to do?
  • · How will I know that things have improved – what will I feel, see and hear that is different and better?
  • · How much do I really want to achieve more satisfaction with this particular area?
  • Example of an out of balance wheel
  • Take the other low areas you ranked, and answer the questions for each of them in order of importance. You may find there is more you can do to improve the balance in your life than you thought.
